Farmers Field will become L.A.'s new showplace for football, championship sporting events, concerts, special events, conventions and exhibitions

The Farmers Insurance Exchange and AEG today announced an historic naming rights agreement for the new downtown Los Angeles football stadium and event center. The 30-year deal provides naming rights for a 1.7 million square foot stadium designed to host football games, international soccer matches and other championship competitions along with concerts and entertainment events. The stadium will be called Farmers Field.

Marriott International Inc. will open a Ritz-Carlton, downtown L.A.’s first five-star hotel, and a JW Marriott in the next two months as part of Anschutz Entertainment Group’s 4 million-square-foot L.A. Live entertainment complex. Luxe Worldwide Hotels is spending $10 million to revamp the downtown Holiday Inn into one of its boutique-style hotels.

Downtown L.A. is puttin' up a Ritz

It's not every day that Los Angeles welcomes a new addition to its skyline. And this week, the city did it in style with a gala for the 54-story Ritz-Carlton hotel-condo tower that is the centerpiece of L.A. Live and opens for business next month. The guest of honor was Tim Leiweke, president and chief executive of AEG, which built the $2.5-billion L.A. Live and has been at the center of the effort to develop the area around Staples Center into a sports and entertainment hub. The blue-hued tower is a big part of the plan. It's the first skyscraper in downtown Los Angeles since the early 1990s.

Second homes: Downtown Los Angeles is on an upswing

The USA's second-largest city is famous for sprawl, and it has long confused visiting urbanites seeking a neighborhood to stroll around. Now transplants and part-timers are rediscovering downtown, which offers just that. "A lot of people from New York end up downtown, because it's the only place in L.A. they feel at home," says realtor Ted Trent, founder of Loft Living L.A. Former New Yorker Russell Roney of ZipRealty agrees: "Downtown always had a stigma, but now it's hot, where SoHo was 15 years ago. You can walk around, there are restaurants."

Ritz-Carlton Residences at L.A. Live Close First Escrow

The first unit in the Ritz-Carlton Residences at L.A. Live closed escrow on Tuesday, a mere 1,355 days after the 54-story building had its official groundbreaking on June 1, 2007.

That's a big deal for those involved in the 224-unit condominium project.

"We're now a living, breathing building with homeowners who will be living here," explained Laurie Miskuski, Director of Sales and Marketing for the project. "The whole dynamic of the building changes when you have people who actually live here." See the full story
